9 Must Haves for a Warm Weather Getaway

Posted on February 20 2015

We sincerely hope everyone has a vacation planned in the next month or two. Especially those of you in the Northeast...Winter is raging across the country and all we can think about is escaping to the beach. We're headed to Miami in a couple of weeks and wanted to share what essentials are on our packing list.

Swimsuits

When it comes to swimwear for plus size figures it is very important to find one that will support and flatter your figure and provide comfort. When picking a bathing suit top look for those that come in bra cup sizes to get the best fit. We’re into high waisted bottoms because of the control and comfort they offer, but another good option are skirt bottoms. Although we love the thought of no tan lines, we don’t recommend strapless suits, they take work to keep up!

Our picks are this chic La Blanca one piece with ruching that will stay in place no matter what beach activity you’re taking part in. We also love this plus size bikini from Swim Sexy swimwear that comes with underwire and bra cup sizes for extra support. How beautiful is the print?

Sarongs

plus size sarongs

Sarongs are a must have for warm weather vacations. They are the perfect way to cover up after leaving the beach, whether you’re headed back to your hotel room or to the beach bar.  They also take up next to no room when packing, so don’t hesitate to bring one along! We love this gorgeous printed sarong for a bohemian vibe. The purple plus size sarong is super affordable at $22 and comes in many colors. Lastly, the crocheted wrap is a cute choice that also comes in black.

Sandals

sandals for vacation

We think a good pair of rubber flip flops, a pair of gladiator sandals and maybe one pair of wedges are all you need for a warm weather vacation. We've picked this rubber slingback pair of Havaianas (upper right) because they could even work at night! We love these metallic snakeskin gladiators because they add a little shine to your look. We also love natural fibers, so we picked raffia strap sandals (top right) and these TOMS wedges with hemp straps.

Tunic

Tunics are a great option for the warm weather because they are light and flowy, not to mention fashionable and functional. They can do triple duty as a coverup, dress or top.  We picked two luxurious silk tunics from our own collection here at Twelve North. One tunic has a beautiful blue and white organic print and the other has hand embroidery and a drawstring waist. You can shop them here

Hat

A sun hat is a given, but why not have a hat that provides more than just shade? We discovered the sun protective brand Sunday Afternoon.  They sell hats and clothing with UV protection built in. This style, the Riviera hat, has a UPF of 50! (UPF is UV protection factor, basically a measure of how much of the UV rays are blocked by the fabric) If you are fair skinned you will love this hat! It would look fabulous paired with a flowy sundress, or throw it on when relaxing by the pool.

Sand-Free Beach Bag

Nobody wants to take the sand home with them. We found this adorable tote bag that has a mesh bottom to keep your things in and sand out. When

beach accessoriesyou leave the beach you open the bottom flap, and give it a good shake. Cool, right?

Sunscreen for Lips and Face

Duh. Everyone knows this by now!  It is important to protect your skin all year round, but most of us only think to in warm, sunny weather. There are many options for sun blocking face creams that claim to not leave your face feeling oily and greasy. We used to use the face versions of popular brands like Coppertone and Nivea, but recently discovered the Anthelios brand. It is wonderful! It is super light and quickly absorbs. You really do feel like you don't have anything on. We use the 50 SPF and love it. Don't forget to protect your lips too with this 25 SPF shea butter balm

Double Duty Dresses

Suitcase space is limited when going on vacation. You need multifunctional pieces. Much like the tunics above, we love dresses that can be used as coverups or sundresses by day, and then dressed up at night for dinner or a night of dancing. We like this one from Old Navy, it would be great over a swimsuit and adorable with a metallic belt and dangly earrings at night.

Chafing Protection

Warm weather can mean serious chafing issues, especially when wearing a dress or swimsuit. You can't exactly wear shape wear or shorts with your swimsuit, so you need a lotion or powder. Try Body Glide which isn't oily or wet and is formulated to stay put even in humidity.

What did we miss? Is there anything you can't vacation without?
